Mauro Rosales: a dream come true for Whitecaps fans

I have long been an admirer of Argentinian football and its footballers. Two of the world’s biggest clubs, River Plate and Boca Juniors have a rivalry as big as Rangers-Celtic and Barcelona-Real Madrid. While Europe has plundered Argentina of virtually all of its best footballers in their prime, Argentina’s top division continues to produce top quality players.

The qualities of the Argentinian footballer are superior technical skill, physicality and a kind of cunning street sense about how to win games. Argentinian footballers combine the best of the South American and the European football traditions.

Mauro Rosales played for Newell’s Old Boys and River Plate in his native Argentina and also had a stop at Ajax, one of Europe’s top teams. He played for the Seattle Sounders, (he gave us a lot of bad memories), until he was bounced to Chivas USA to give the Sounders salary cap space. Now he is coming to play for the Vancouver Whitecaps. I am absolutely thrilled. Many times I had wished he would come to Vancouver and now he is here. He comes by way of a trade which sent midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker to Chivas.

Though Rosales is in the twilight of his career at 33, recent Whitecaps matches with Chivas have demonstrated that he can still inflict heavy damage. He is a tremendously intelligent footballer with a natural touch on the ball. He has great vision and can both pass and cross the ball with tremendous pace and accuracy. Unlike Morales, whose shooting is poor, Rosales can hit the net and score goals. He can also take free kicks and score off of them, something the Whitecaps have been unable to do since a little fellow called Camilo left for Mexico.

The prospect of him playing alongside Pedro Morales is one which is tremendously exiting. Pedro finally has someone to play with! It promises to be like the short time we had Alan Ball and Rudi Krol playing for the Whitecaps at the same time back in 1980.

We have a real treat in store for us and the opportunity to see very special player play in a Vancouver Whitecaps jersey. Welcome to Vancouver Mauro Rosales!

  1. This trade should allow Mattocks to miss even more sitters.

    • Ha ha! Ithink there will be lots of chances to go around.
