Last night DC United upset favourites Real Salt Lake 1-0 to win the US Open Cup final.

For Vancouver Whitecaps fans this result added some irony to our loss to RSL last week. RSL had saved their “A” team for the US Open Cup Final the following Tuesday and sent their second string “RSL B” side to beat us 1-0 here in Vancouver last Saturday. It looked like a wise use of resources: surely RSL “A” would beat DC United, the worst team in Major League Soccer, in the cup final. It looks as though they should have started RSL “B” instead. Had they done so, I think they probably would have won, judging by their brilliant performance here in Vancouver.

It was nice to see ex-Whitecaps midfielder John Thorrington winning the cup, and playing a key part in the goal United scored. It was also nice to see Canadian Dwayne De Rosario getting some silverware after what has been a difficult time at DC. Another Canadian and ex-Whitecap Kyle Porter was in the squad but sat on the bench and saw no action.

Since the Whitecaps look like going without any honours this year I have to take these little pleasures from elsewhere!
