Formations!!!February 28, 2013 at 10:56 pm | Posted in Vancouver Whitecaps, Whitecaps Season 2013 | 1 Comment
One of the things fans love to do prior to a much anticipated opening match is to try to pick the formation the coach will put out on the pitch. This is a challenge, especially with Martin Rennie, who tends to be less than predictable, keeping his squad on their toes. I often disagree with Rennie, especially when it comes to playing players out of their strongest position.
Players hate to play outside of their position, and modern football is now a game of specialists. In my view, if you have a player who is excellent in a position, play him there. Why play the player in a position so that he can be mediocre? This has been with case with Alain Rochat, who has played at left back, centre back and in a holding midfield position. Rochat’s best position is a left back, where he excels. He not only defends well, but he is superb at making attacking moves down the left flank. In midfield and at centre back he tends to disappear, having much less of a positive impact. In spite of this, the unfortunate reality is that Rennie is bound and determined to prefer Rochat as a mediocre midfielder rather than an excellent left back.
Who Will Rennie Play?
Given this is a home match and the opening match of the season, I expect Rennie to attack. This means starting with Darren Mattocks up front. I believe Rennie will shift between 4-4-2 and 4-5-1. Kenny Miller will be the gear that shifts between 4-4-2 and 4-5-1. Daigo Kobayashi will play dead centre of midfield. Camilo will play on the left side of midfield, doubling as a winger. The Superbly fit Koffie will play box to box midfield and Rochat will play defensive holding midfield.
I expect Knighton to start in goal, Harvey at left back, O’Brien and Jay DeMerit (Rusin if DeMerit is too injured to play) as centre backs and YP Lee at right back.
I expect Nigel Reo-Coker to come on as a sub for Alain Rochat. Kekuta Mennah will come on for either Camilo or Miller, whichever is less effective.
Who should Rennie Play?
a 4-3-3 in attack shifting to a 4-5-1 in defense with Mattocks up front, Mennah at left mid in defense and left wing in attack, and Camilo on the right midfield, right wing in attack. The midfield would be a triangle consisting of Kobayashi in the centre, Reo-Coker at left behind him and Koffie on the right. In goal would be Joe Cannon, and the back line would be Rochat at left back, O’Brien and DeMerit in the centre, and YP Lee at right back.
There is it, my version of “fantasy football”.
