Bring on the Goats!!!

Club Deportivo Guadalajara (AKA “Chivas” translated as “Goats”)is one of the most popular teams in Mexican football. It is a bit like the Montreal Canadians are in Canada. People across Mexico support them with a special passion. In 2004 the owners of Chivas decided to partner with Major League Soccer and form “Chivas USA”, a kind of satellite operation which would hopefully be embraced by the many Mexican  immigrants to the USA.

Chivas USA plays out of the Home Depot Centre in Los Angeles, where they ground share with their more glamorous counterparts, the LA Galaxy. The Galaxy out draw Chivas USA in attendance by a quite considerable amount, but Chivas seem to have been able to attract a decent crowd of supporters of about 13,000 to 18,000 or so. The galaxy typically fill the stadium with 27,000.  How the Goats address this imbalance is not clear.

I am not sure if they have failed to entirely capture the imagination of Mexican supporters, or if the Chivas character does not survive the move over the border. Perhaps Chivas supporters see Chivas USA as second rate. I am a bit surprised they don’t get the same crowds as the Galaxy.

Chivas have yet to win a game this year and will be looking for a win at Empire.

In any event, and whoever they are, we need to beat the Goats!
