What a relief!  Mouloud Akloul has signed a contract with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Mouloud was signed last year for the last season of division 2 with an eye towards including him in the MLS squad for 2011. During the first half of the first league game he played for us he scored a goal off of a corner kick with a brave lunge for the ball in the six yard box.   He fell awkwardly, got up to celebrate his goal, but had to limp off of the pitch with a badly broken ankle.   He was taken on a stretcher to hospital.

It was tragic.  He really looked like he was enjoying himself, and was playing very well.  He obviously had the touch to make good passes out of the back of the field, a quality which is much coveted in a defender.

Those of us who knew him from last year were worried his career was finished when it took so long to recover.  He hung around and eventually showed up in the squad warming up with the team late on in the 2010 season, clowning around with a big smile on his face.

I have to say I was fearing we would see a sad announcement that the Whitecaps would not sign him because his injury had failed to heal.  Thankfully, this has not happened. I am delighted he has signed a contract with the Whitecaps.  I hope to see him play at Empire when he gets fit.  You have to praise the man for his perseverance.  He must have faced some dark days after his injury.   Mercifully, he is now headed into the light.

Welcome to the Vancouver Whitecaps, Mouloud Akloul!
