A Fit Beckham Good for MLS

One of the problems with Major League Soccer is the long off season.  The season runs from mid March through October, which means, depending upon whether your team makes the playoffs, you could be facing a four to five month layoff from competitive football.  This is too long and is laughable when you compare it to European leagues, where players are lucky if they get one month off in a year.  This long layoff is especially a concern for older players, who lose fitness and gain weight easier. Match skills and alertness decline if you sit around. Some of the early season USL-1 games used to be pathetic because the players were nowhere near being match fit.

David Beckham needs to stay fit in order to keep playing at a high level in Major League Soccer.  He is no spring chicken, and the long layoff must be agonizing for a player who loves his football.  Major League Soccer and the Los Angeles Galaxy should get behind the proposed loan of David Beckham to Tottenham.   They will get a better player in the springtime if it happens.

Just keep your fingers crossed he does not get injured again…
