Happy Birthday Pele!

I visited the FIFA site today and discovered it is Pele’s 70th birthday today.   I wish the man, who was the greatest footballer ever, all of the best.  It certainly is close between Maradona and Pele, and I must admit I go back and forth in saying one is better than the other.  When the complete package of both men are compared, however,  Pele comes out on top. Especially when character is factored in.

The Brazilian’s play at his first World Cup in Sweden, in 1958, was a shock and a revelation to the world of football, and 12 years later in Mexico he still had the ability to defy logic and sense when he won the World Cup again. That Brazil side of 1970 was the best side ever to play football, and as one commentator whose name escapes me put it, football has been a bit of a disappointment ever since!

Pele only played for two clubs in his career: Santos of Brazil and the New York Cosmos. Though it was short lived, Pele turned North Americans on to football for the first time, and laid the groundwork for what we now enjoy on this continent. We can only hope the New York Cosmos will rise again as a team to play at the highest level.

Time to take a pause and honour the great man.   Viva Pele!  Happy birthday!
