Leeds United Go Up!

Leeds United beat Bristol Rovers today to earn automatic promotion to the Championship. This is a happy day for English football, because United belong in the upper echelons of English football.  This has been a catastrophic decade for Leeds, who managed to go from the semi-final of the Champions league in 2001 to League One football in a matter of five or so years.

Leeds won the English Division one title the year before the Premiership arrived.  They were a great team in the late 60’s and early 70’s.  During the late 70’s and early 80’s Leeds were a kind of sister team to the Vancouver Whitecaps, as I have writen about previously in another post: https://whitecapsfan.wordpress.com/2009/03/03/whatever-happened-to-leeds-united/

In my view the Premiership has suffered for the lack of Leeds United.  I hope they go up from the Championship in the next couple of years.  I would love it if the Whitecaps would invite Leeds over for a friendly or develop some kind of strategic alliance with Leeds to develop young players.  Lets get the friendship going again!

Up Leeds United!

  1. Yes, and they will be in the C-ship League with Forest again. Oh well, maybe Blackpool who by the way, Sir Stanley Matthews played for some besides Stoke City will make it to the top league. If one ever gets a chance to read about the old greats, Matthews or Sir Tom Finley, I’ll tell you that it will be good reading.

    • I was hoping Notts Forest would go back up to the Premiership… Oh, well, I suppose they don’t deserve to if they let in six goals in two games against a team that finished 6th in the Championship. Apparently the last time Blackpool were in the top flight it was 1971!

Thanks for your comments. Keep ’em coming!
