Whitecaps 1-Charleston Battery 2

It is two successive losses to the two top table teams.   Again, it was defensive troubles which lost us the match.  We lost yet another game 1-2, our favourite score this season, unfortunately. The failure of the Whitecaps to sort out the middle at the back is really the story of this year’s mediocre and inconsistant season.  We have lost Thompson, Charles and Parke from the squad.   We started Pozniak and Reda last night.  Pozniak is not fit, and needs to sharpen up.  In general we looked slow on defence and did not anticipate.  Our central defence needs to read the game better.  Too bad we fired Jeff Clarke in the off season…

The team was tired no doubt from having arrived in Vancouver at 4 on the morning after playing in Portland the night before.   This year’s scheduling is really quite unbelievable.  Two games back to back is just not football.  If players are mentally tired, they will make mistakes.  In footy, mistakes at the back get punished cruelly in a game where it is easier to defend than to attack.

Cheers to Nash who scored another beauty late on after a lovely lay-off from Marcus Haber.   We dominated in the second half, and had we kept it scoreless at home in the first half, the match was ours.

I must say I was a bit tired myself at the match having gone to Seattle on Wednesday night.  Chris Cole and his Run Inn crew watched three matches in three nights:  Seattle v. Barca; Portland v. Whitecaps; and Whitecaps v. Charleston.  What  footy fans those guys are!!!  No one would ever doubt their street cred.
