USA 0 – Mexico 5: CONCACAF Gold Cup

The sad thing about the CONCACAF Gold Cup is how little it matters, even to the nation which hosts it.  The USA should not he allowed to host the tournament again as they fielded a reserve team to play a much stronger Mexican side in the final.   The Americans had just participated in the Confederations Cup where they fielded a much stronger squad.   It was too much to ask for them to field a strong squad for two successive tournaments held in such close proximity.  If that was the case, however, why host the thing?   Surely someone else could have stepped up to the plate to do it.

The Gold Cup should be played once every four years like the European Championships.  There should also be an incentive to win so that participants bring strong squads.

CONCACAF needs to make the tournament matter so that the fans actually care about what happens.   This year’s tournament had very poor and spotty TV coverage.  It is time for some new ideas, but will they come from those currently in charge?   CONCACAF is floundering…
