Whitecaps 4 PR Islanders 2

Happy days are here again!

Just when we thought it could not get more bizarre this season, it did.  As I walked out of my in-laws after a lovely cup of tea and some cookies, some rain was coming down.  I thought, “I’ll get my umbrella just in case”.  It turned out to be the right decision!  Within 10 minutes of the opening of the game is was absolutely pelting it down with huge raindrops.

The Caps scored early when a high bouncing ball and a dodgy keeper combined to gift Vancouver a goal in the fourth minute.  The PRI defender headed the ball exquisitely over the head of his own keeper to an onrushing Haber who showed good striker’s instinct by putting the defender under pressure and pouncing on the ball as he just beat the keeper to tap it in.

It was a great open match with lots of chances when the match was delayed by a huge lightning storm in the 44th minute.  The lightning was absolutely sheeting down and the fans siting on the metal bleachers were ordered to take cover under the main grandstand.  It was like an air raid during the second world war, as we all huddled together in fear.  There was a two hour delay before the match continued.

The Caps fared better from the delay and came out swinging.   In the 51st minute Tyrell Burgess forced and own goal with a brilliant in swinging corner kick which a PRI defender glanced into his own net.   It was a fantastic near post corner, which is what we have been missing as Nash has been taking corners for about six years in a row now!  I was just saying that Burgess should take corners from now on but he flufffed two corners in quick succession, so back to the training pitch Tyrell…

Hard work and precise passing from Gordon Chin created the Caps third goal as Chin found Marlon James making a well timed lateral run.  James faked as though he was going left, then went right and absolutely smashed home a shot into the goalkeepers top left corner in the 64th.  3-0 Whitecaps.

PRI fought back to get a penalty late on and ex Whitecaps player Josh Hansen slotted home PRI’s first in the 76th.

The goal festival continued as Burgess found James unmarked on the penalty spot with the perfect cross for James to head home with a cool striker’s header low to the left of PRI’s keeper.  4-1 Whitecaps.  PRI scored a late goal again through Hansen.

It was great to see Burgess play so well.  He has really matured in the last few games and has replaced Ansu Toure to the point where Toure will have to win his place back.  It was also great to see Marlon James playing with dominance in and around the penalty area.  Lets hope he stays fit because if he does we will be clawing out way back up the table.

After a disappointing first half of the season, the Whitecaps show signs of turning over a new leaf and giving it hell in the second half.  Our play was crisp and strong last night and the Caps showed real desire to win-which was lacking in the first half of the season.  PRI are joint leaders of the USL-1 and could have gone out in front with sole possession of the lead had they beaten the Caps.  I guess we still have some pride in being champions.

Eight goals in the last two home games is not bad at all…  Lets hope we get some momentum going.
