Montreal Wins, Fair and Square

The Whitecaps lost fair and square today.  At least this was an honest match unlike the TFC “Miracle in Montreal” from last Thursday night.

The Caps poor defence was the team’s undoing again.  On the first goal Placentino, one of three unmarked Impact players to the right of goal, smashed one past a helpless Nolly in goal.

On the second goal Placentino was the provider for Roberto Brown who received the ball with his back to goal within the six yard box.   For some strange reason Hirano decided to back off of Brown and try to play goal rather than preventing Brown from turning and shooting, which is exactly what he did, virtually unopposed.   The Caps were unlucky not to score when James headed a rocket off of the crossbar, only to have the rebound fall to Reda who headed off the post.  The Caps were down 2-0 at halftime.

The Caps pulled one back from Marlon James who took a cross from Arze deep on the left wing and smashed home after a perfect first touch.   While James got us back in it, he missed two sitters late in the game that would have tied it up.  He got a perfect cross from Toure deep on the left side which he managed to head wide.  Frankly, it was harder to miss than to score and that would have seen us through to a tie.   He got another header on goal from a similar distance only to be robbed from a miracle save from Matt Jordan.  If only Jordan had played on Thursday night!  He certainly proved why he is one of the best keepers in the USL-1.

For the Whitecaps it looks like a season of mid-table mediocrity is going to be the fate of the team.    With this loss, we have completely lost touch with the lead pack, composed of Portland, Charleston, Puerto Rico and Carolina.   We are stuck in the middle pack with Montreal, Rochester and Miami.   It looks like our fight will be for a playoff spot this year.
