Canadian Championship: Montreal 0 Vancouver 2

It looks like the luck finally went our way tonight verses l’ Impact de Montreal.   Haber and Gbeke, our misfiring forwards, each put one in, Haber within the first minute of play.   Too bad it wasn’t on the tele, as Sportsnet decided not to show the game in favour of some junior hockey.  It looks like it was a cracking match with lots of chances at both ends.   Apparently Sportsnet will be showing 4 of the six Canadian Championship games, but they may regret not showing this one.  I tried on my computer to get the feed but was unsuccessful.    I suppose this is part of the growing pains of the sport, and while Sportsnet is doing what it can for footy, it really missed the chance to show a cracker of a game.

Now we are back in it with half a chance of catching Toronto.  We will have to beat TFC in our home leg and hope that Montreal does damage against them in the return leg in Montreal.   I must say I am very excited about this whole Canadian Championship .  I find it more compelling at this point than the USL-1 championship.   While the USL-1 cup is a great achievement, it does not get you into the CONCACAF Champions League like the Canadian Championship does.

Given the success of the Montreal Impact  and the Puerto Rico Islanders in the CONCACAF Champs League last year, perhaps it is time to re-visit this state of affairs!  The standard of football in USL-1 is clearly competitive with other leagues in the confederation.   It appears that only the Mexican league is better, if we go by last years CONCACAF Champs League results.
