Ah, at last, a victory for 2009.  Martin Nash smashed in a full volley from what looked like 25-30 yards out about half way through the second half.

the starting line up:

Nolly in goal, Reda, Charles, Bellisimo and Hirano at the back; Nash, Gage, Trafford, Knight in mid; and Haber and Gbeke up front.

We got our first look at striker Marlon James who came on in the second half.  The team picked up immediately once he came on the pitch. He has a commanding presence, being tall and strong.  He is very composed and battles for the ball. He showed some class out there and created some good chances.  This guy is the real thing and will definitely do some damage for the Caps this year.  Great signing!

In the first half it was an even contest and we were lucky when Keita missed a tap-in under pressure from Reda.   Jay Nolly made a spectacular save from Portland’s little  full-back who struck a sweet volley that was headed right for the top left corner.   Portland looked a good team and even had the edge on us in the first half.

The Caps really rose to the occasion in the second half. Toure, Arze and Moose all came on as subs and gave a good account of themselves. Portland had their chances in the second half too, and we are giving up chances a bit too easily.  We will be punished over the season unless we tighten it up a bit at the back.

It was Marty Nash who smashed a full volley towards the right side of the goal, which the keeper would have saved if the ball had not struck the arm of a Portland defender.  Instead, the ball deflected into the left side of the goal.  Well done Nash, he took the chance and was rewarded, with a bit of luck, for his positive play.   The goal celebration was great, and the players went bonkers behind the goal right in front of us.

The team looked like last year’s team towards the end of the game and are really starting to link up well.   That was good fun in the second half, and I think we have a lot to look forward to this year.
