More good news as Lyle Martin and Wesley Charles signed up for next year.

This will be Lyle’s third year with the Caps at right back.  Last year was his breakout year as a player and he was vastly improved over the previous year’s form in which he was having difficulty beating men with the ball on the right flank.  This year he got past that and past a lot of defenders on his runs down the sideline.  His crosses have improved and he even scored a fantastic goal late in the season after jinxing past a few defenders.   Lyle really started to look good during the Beckham match against the Los Angeles Galaxy, when he really showed his speed.  At only 23 he already plays with a very mature head.  He is calm and cool in defence and makes no mistakes.  His confidence is peaking and he will only improve.  If we get an MLS franchise, he will be maturing at the right moment.

Wesley Charles really impressed this year.  This guy is calm and cool as a cucumber in the center of defence.   He is quick in spite of his size and has superb judgement in crisis situations.  Numerous times during the playoffs the Caps defence looked to have collapsed only to be saved at the last second by Charles’ perfectly timed interventions.  Though he looks a bit slow and unfit, it never showed in the results.  He will be crucial in bringing along young players with his experience and leadership.   He obviously enjoyed playing here and really celebrated when the championship was won.   He is a very likeable character and is a fan favourite.

Great to have these guys back.
