Eddie Sebrango Traded to Montreal

What a sad development…  Eddie was the finest player to watch at Swangard for the last few years and he made a major contribution in the Championship wins of 2006 and 2008.   He effectively replaced injury ridden Jason Jordan as our star striker and led the team from the front.  He is a complete player in terms of skill and leadership.  It is very difficult indeed to replace a person and a player of his quality.  What the team needs now is not just another striker but a guy who can lead the team as well.  Perhaps this is the role that Gbeke can take on now that he has proven himself by scoring the goals in the final.  It has been written that Orgill and Edwini-Bonsu will take over in the striker’s role, but we will need to get a player who can lead the team which Orgill and Edwini-Bonsu will be unable able to do because of their youth.

Eddie’s reason for leaving is that he wants to be closer to his children.  No one can argue with this and there is no doubt that family is more important than anything in football.

I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times on the Point Grey turf where he was coaching and he was very pleasant and approachable.  It is truly a case of our loss is Montreal’s gain.

My belief is that the Whitecaps have a serious recruitment problem now.  It is not clear to me who the leader of our team is on the pitch.  The Caps will have to sign a quality player to replace Sebrango if such a player is available.  The loss of Eddie leaves a huge hole in our team.

Best of luck in Montreal, Eddie (except against the Whitecaps, of course…).
