Vancouver Whitecaps 2 Minnesota Thunder 0

The Caps came through a very difficult evening last night to get a favourable result in the first leg of the Quarter finals.  If it were not for ‘keeper Jay Nolly we could be in trouble.  All credit to Minny, they got three excellent chances in the first half but Nolly stopped them all with three top-class saves: one for a volley going over his head bound for goal, one 50-50 ball on a Minny breakthrough, and one diving low to his left to parry away a certain goal.

The Caps looked a bit sluggish, but were made slow by a terrible pitch that was loose and heavy, thanks to the SFU football team.   We pressed forward early but could only get a goal through a Steve Kindel cross which a Minny defender glanced into his own goal.  If there was proof of the saying “a good ball is never wasted”, this was it.   If not for Nolly’s saves, Minnesota would have responded.  Their counter attack game is quite effective.

In the second half Minnesota defended well, but you could feel a goal coming on.  In the last minutes of play Jordan came on and put a lovely little ball through to a charging Justin Moose, whose blast was stopped by the keeper.  The keeper could not prevent Moose from putting away the rebound, however. It was great vision from Jordan which made the goal, and he has proven he still has it.

The Caps will have to tighten up their leaky defence which gave away too many quality chances in this game.  Better teams will punish us for that.   To add to our defensive woes, big Charles went limping off of the pitch and I don’t imagine he will play on Sunday in Minny.
