Vancouver Whitecaps 0- Minnesota Thunder 0

It is becoming a theme of late:  tired teams come into town after one of the USL’s brutal road trips with the sole ambition of achieving a 0-0 draw.  It does not always work, but it did last night.  Minny almost stole it all when they hit the post in injury time after an excellently executed counter attack.

I give a lot of credit to Minny.  They are an extremely fit and fast team that is very well organized at the back.  They were down to 10 men for a long time, but they seldom gave the Caps a scoring opportunity.  I was disappointed in the fact that we could not break them down .  When a team is down to 10 men you must exploit the extra space by playing men wide right on the touch line.  When the defenders chase outside, more space is created down the middle.  The Caps did not use the width of the pitch to get behind defenders.  Our crosses were of poor quality and accuracy.  At this level a cross should be deadly accurate and should really test the defenders.  Too many time balls were lofted into the area casually, and were dealt with easily by Minny’s efficient defenders.

Of our strikers Gbeke looked very good up front.  He created several good chances for others and had a good header that would have been in with a bit of luck.  I felt we needed to bring in Edwini-Bonsu to test the back line with his speed.  Jordan and Addlery proved to be toothless tigers when they came in.

It was supposed to be a showcase for our MLS bid.  The fans did their part, but the players on the pitch could not get it done.  With this draw, our hopes of catching Puerto Rico took a blow.  We can only hope that PR has a run of bad results like ours of late.
