Vancouver Whitecaps 2 Atlanta Silverbacks 0

It was a midweek game during a rainy week and it showed.  The crowd was small and it was clear that although there were more than 4000 tickets sold, many of those decided not to turn up.  I suppose the weather was bad, and there are many who are on vacation, and it was a rather dull atmosphere at the ground to start with.  The game was dominated by the Caps, who had four corner kicks early on in the game.  Lyle Martin woke up the crowd with an electrifying goal, curling the ball into the net after jinxing past four or so Atlanta players.  It was a great effort, and for Martin, a well deserved first goal for the Whitecaps.  This is his second season for the Caps and I believe he has the potential to become a very good player indeed.  Let hope he stays clear of injury so that we can watch his confidence grow. I think now that he has scored his first, goals will come more frequently for him.

The caps put on a great show in the second half and overwhelmed  Atlanta who looked tired and dispirited.   Sebrango scored the game’s second goal from a close range volley to the right of the goal keeper.  For a guy in his mid 30’s Eddie is very strong, and muscled past a defender to win a 50/50 ball to make room for a powerful strike.  It is a joy to have him on our team.  Quintiero got two hands to the ball but the force of the shot drove the ball against the underside of the crossbar and into the goal.

Nash was unlucky not to score when he crashed a full volley from 25 yards against the post.  He had a superb game and deserved that goal.

The game that started with a dull atmosphere on a rainy night ended as a party.  Had Edwini-Bonsu put away his breakaway chance it would have been a more appropriate scoreline.
