Vancouver Whitecaps 2 Portland Timbers 1

This was an odd scrappy affair, all the more odd because Addlery scored 2 goals.  After struggling to score all year he made scoring look easy on this night.   The Caps looked a bit disjointed in their play, in part because key central midfielder Clarke was out injured and was replaced by newcomer Mason Trafford.  Though Trafford was solid, the team looked a bit lost without Clarke’s contribution.  Had Clarke been on the pitch I think we would have been good for a couple of more goals.

It was great to see the young Edwini-Bonsu play as a sub.  The youngster looked impressive and his pace is quite remarkable.  I would like to see more of the lad, and I think he is a threat to Jordan’s spot on the team, unless JJ ups his fitness and makes more of the limited time he is getting on the pitch.  The good news is that we have Sebrango, Gbeke, Jordan, Addlery AND Edwini-Bonsu available to score goals.

I was a bit concerned about the empty seats in the stands, though there was a BC Lions game and we are in the height of the vacation season.  It is interesting to note that the biggest and most enthusiastic crowd we had all year was against Toronto FC.  Perhaps the anticipation of joining MLS has made people less willing to turn out for the USL teams with a lesser profile.

I am not quite sure of what has happened to Portland.  They looked like they were on the verge of building a good team after last year, but they have fallen behind again.  Perhaps they have the MLS blues too!
