Manchester City 3 West Ham 0

Ah, Mark Noble, what have ye done?  A foolish and totally unnecessary hand ball followed by a wild tackle a few minutes later put West Ham down to ten men for the majority of the game.   The Hammers were equal to the task until this foolishness.   Cole had gone out injured and Freddie Sears was brought on to replace him.  I was all ready to enjoy seeing what he could do when Noble’s actions made it necessary to take a striker off to add a more defensive player.

What concerns me is West Ham’s lack of pace.  The Hammers stood around like a bunch of traffic pylons, played nice one touch football, but had no pace to open up the game.  It was as if all of the players had a groin injury and were afraid to run.

It was always going to be tough, but I did not like the way the team capitulated and gave up three goals.  Often getting a man sent off galvanizes a team and they fight like a wounded animal.  Not so with the Hammers and I worry a bit about the team spirit.  We don’t have a natural leader on the pitch to inspire the team with fighting spirit.  It looks like the malaise of last season is going to linger on.

Praise to Manchester City and their beautiful City of Manchester stadium.  It really is a work of art and it is a joy to watch games there.
