Vancouver Whitecaps 3 Atlanta 2: Eddie rules again!

Eddie Sebrango proved to be the downfall of Atlanta with two goals on the night.  It was the best and the worst of times for the Caps, who went down 0-1 early (as is their habit at home), tied it up thanks to Jeff Clarke’s cool low shot, went behind again 2-1 just before half time, drew level with 15 mins left through Sebrango, and won it in the last few minutes on a disputed goal through Sebrango again.  The keeper for Atlanta was furious and claimed he was fouled.  He may have had a case, but he failed to punch clear or hold on to the ball and I saw no clear foul by the Caps.  I suppose he will say he was interfered with in his own 6-yard box, which should be a foul, but hey, we will take it!!!

The Caps gave up two goals where they looked very flat-footed and lethargic on defence.  They will have to sort that out, one of the problems being that neither Jarun nor Charles seem to be taking a leadership role in the middle.  The second goal we gave up was a gift, with one of our guys just passing the ball to their forward as a gift.

Sebrango hit the post and the crossbar.  Jordan looked good but he still has some catching up to do with his quickness.  He did set up Clarke’s goal while scoring his 200th point for the Caps.  Congratulations JJ! Lyle Martin did very well on the right side, but still has some difficulty in getting consistent quality crosses in the box.

The good news is that the Caps are creating many chances in front of the goal.  If we can just be more consistent at the back and stop giving up the early goals when we are at home, the Whitecaps could win the league and the USL cup.

The crowd was  bit small and one has to wonder if the afternoon game format is really working for the Caps.  I prefer the night games myself, rather than shooting a hole in the day with the afternoon games.

We are top of the league!!!
