The Right Venue, the Right League

For years the Toronto Lynx toiled away in obscurity with the help of the generous Hartrell family.  They played in the Canadian Soccer League and the USL alongside the Vancouver 86ers and Whitecaps.  Despite the fact they  played in a larger city, Vancouver teams always outdrew them.  Some visionaries in Toronto decide to build a national soccer stadium in Toronto with the hopes of getting a Major League Soccer franchise.   Major League Soccer demands a new soccer specific stadium in order to grant a franchise.  Toronto did what was required and got an MLS franchise, Toronto FC.  The city that could barely muster 2000 spectators for USL 1 suddenly has more than 20,000 per match.  This is because they are in the right venue in the right league.  Vancouver has always outdrawn Toronto in soccer spectators.  If we had Whitecaps Waterfront Stadium and a franchise in the MLS we could pull 30,000 per match.  The right venue, the right league… C’mon Vancouver city politicians, get it done already!!!!
