Toronto’s Soccer Stadium

Ah, the frustration of the Vancouver soccer fan, observing the wildly successful Toronto FC in their new home of BMO Field.  This stadium was built, not uncontroversially it must be said, with the money and cooperation of the Federal, provincial, and  municipal governments in conjunction with private money.  Our visionary owner Greg Kerfoot has offerred to build it entirely with his own money, but has made it clear that governments are welcome to participate.   Unfortunately in our fair city he is viewed with suspicion in some quarters.  I believe that government will, and should, eventually participate in the stadium effort especially in the area of infrastructure around the stadium.   This infrastructure is for the public good, which is the goal of government.   Vancouver should look to the East to see what BMO field has done for Toronto: it has given a home to professional soccer in Canada.  This is essential to grow the sport, which is the number one participation sport in Canada.  Now if only BMO field had real grass!  But our stadium will and then we will be the envy of all…

Come on Vancouver, get off your ass!!!!
