De Guzman to TFC?

There is a lot of exciting chatter about Julian De Guzman getting signed as a designated player for TFC. Some sources claim the deal is 90% done. I have trouble believing it. JDG is 28 years old which is prime time for the modern player. He has been playing for Deportivo La Caruna in La Liga in Spain for the last three years or so. I find it hard to believe that he would come over at such a young age. I think he would more likely come over in four years time. If he gets an offer from a top club in England, Holland or Spain, I can’t see him coming home just yet. Plus, if he stays in Europe he will always be playing on grass, rather than the plastic of TFC and other MLS clubs. Fieldturf will only give him nagging injuries which will shorten his career.

It is an auspicious move for TFC and if they pull it off it will certainly show the ambition of the club. It would be nice to see the best Canadian player playing with a Canadian club… I think it will eventually happen, but perhaps later rather than sooner.
